About the medborgerskabsprøve
The Danish permanent-residence test: dates, fee, format and how to prepare – in English.
Who takes the test?
The medborgerskabsprøve (literally "citizenship test", but it is the test for permanent residence) is one of the supplementary conditions for a permanent residence permit in Denmark. Besides the basic requirements, you must meet two of four supplementary conditions – a passed medborgerskabsprøve is one of them; the other three concern employment, income and Danish language skills. You can sit the test before you apply, and the certificate does not expire.
Do not confuse it with the indfødsretsprøve, the 45-question test required when applying for Danish citizenship.
Format
- 25 questions in Danish, each with two or three answer options. Only one is correct; tick one box.
- 30 minutes, on paper, no aids.
- Pass with 20 correct – at most five mistakes.
- All questions are based on the official study material, Læremateriale til medborgerskabsprøven. The current edition (August 2026) has 26 fact sheets and a glossary.
- Held twice a year, in late May/early June and in late November. The next sitting is 25 November 2026 at 11:00.
Registration and fee
You register with one of the language centres that run the test – see the list of test centres. Registration closes about five weeks before the test: for 25 November 2026 the deadline is 21 October 2026. The fee is DKK 946 in 2026, paid to the test centre for each attempt. Bring valid ID on the day. Results come from the test centre, usually within three to four weeks.
How to prepare
- Read the study material fact sheet by fact sheet (in Danish – the test is in Danish).
- Try the practice questions in English to check that you understand the content, then switch to the Danish exercises.
- Sit the real past tests from SIRI against the clock, and finish with the timed test on this site.
